New Year Family Traditions

PC: @malino_va

New Year’s Day can be a catalyst for a “fresh” start. A day in which new beginnings can occur. However, before I go into some fun family traditions, I have to say I was quite curious to the "why" behind the celebration. I mean, when did the world start celebrating this event?

Well like most items, all roads lead to Rome, and in this case, we can thank Julius Caesar for recalibrating the calendar and allowing us to have the most similar time keeping to what we experience today.

“As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future.” www.history.com

From that point in time, many different cultures, religions, and people have continued to move forward with the opportunities for new beginnings and have implemented these customs into yearly traditions.

My husband’s family ensures that on the new year, we have both some form of pork (either tenderloin or bratwurst) with sauerkraut. This is to ensure prosperity and good luck.

What are some of your family traditions for New Years?
