Chinese Tradition Sitting the Month

Updated: Nov 17, 2019

Postpartum Meals - it's an amazing thing.

You may have heard of the Chinese tradition after childbirth called Sitting the Month. It funny sounding because it’s a literal translation from Chinese but it’s essentially what the mom does – rest. It’s a full month of rest and recovery to help ensure the new mom recovers from the big deal of labor and delivery, as well as helps ensure everything goes back to “normal” enough so that you can gain strength for the long haul.

There are a lot of rules that go along with Sitting the Month, including not coming in contact with cold, but what you eat is especially important in making sure your uterus recovers, bringing in milk, and all that jazz. It’s complicated to the uninitiated (and let’s be honest those that kind of are initiated) and based upon thousands of years of Chinese medicine.

My sweet mom was around for my first Sitting the Month and insisted on cooking for me, herself. This is a pretty big damn deal considering she doesn’t like to cook. And it’s not that she doesn’t know how, she just doesn’t really enjoy it the way you’d assume she would, since she will travel just to eat. She spent a great deal of time making vats of stuff not to mention a great deal of money making sure everything was organically sourced. I’m sorry to say that it was gross. And that’s being generous. I distinctly recall sobbing into a bowl of milk-producing soup while trying to choke it down.

Thank god we found the postpartum meal delivery service from Jing Mommy (www.jingmommy.com). Not only were the meals incredibly delicious, I truly believe they helped with my speedy recovery and my ease with breastfeeding. I had a difficult time with making enough milk with my first son and was certain we’d have to supplement with formula again with our second. But surprisingly, my milk came in without any issues and our second little is now the chunky hunky that a mom dreams of.

The meals are delivered in from California on a weekly basis. I got the package that included lunch and dinner. Each day was packaged individually. Each meal includes 2 dishes and 1 dessert for a total of 6 packs within each daily package. The first week includes a special broth with Chinese herbs to help clean out the uterus and shrink it back to size. Other than the special broth, it’s all cooked so heating is the only thing needed for nutrient dense meals for the new mom. Each meal is specially designed to help with postpartum and specifically marked so you know what day to eat which package.

It was so great that we ended up ordering a second month and I’ve been transitioning it in with our family meals. I hope all new mammas can be as fortunate as I in being well fed the first few weeks postpartum.
