Snoo Smart Sleeper

Updated: Nov 16, 2019

I’m in perpetual amazement at our ability to innovate.  It’s a main reason why I went into Engineering and it’s the reason why I’m talking about the Snoo Smart Sleeper.

The Snoo was developed by renowned pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp – if you don’t know who he is, you likely know about his work.  He’s the pediatrician that did The Happiest Baby on The Block and introduced the world to the 5 S’s to soothe newborns – swaddling, shushing, side/stomach, swing, and suck.  Yes – THAT Harvey Karp!  If you don’t already know about the S’s and will have a newborn soon or know someone with a newborn, you should look into The Happiest Baby on the Block.  And if reading isn’t your thing, there is a documentary that you can watch in like an hour. As a collaboration with Yves Béhar, the Snoo Smart Sleeper has a lovely Scandinavian design.  It’s beautiful in both innovation and aesthetic.  Dr. Karp’s 5 S’s saved us with our first son.

The Snoo Smart Sleeper is saving us with our second.  With 5 years apart between our two kids we had completely forgotten the nuances of caring for a newborn.  And here is the amazing part – the Snoo safely implements 4 of the 5 S’s for us.  It’s a smart fancy shmancy bassinet with a sound machine that rocks our baby.  No joke.  What you are reading is for real.

The smart part of it all, is that if it senses the baby fussing or crying, the sound machine, as well as the rocking, increases in intensity and volume until the baby is soothed back to sleep.  If the baby can’t be soothed, after a small amount of time, the whole thing turns off and parent is alerted that baby needs your care.  This is all done via your smart phone app (you know how I love my smart phone apps)!

The price of the Snoo Smart Sleeper is high - I’m not going to sugar coat it. At the time of publishing the Snoo is about $1300 USD to purchase. This price kept us from getting one until Baby A was going on 4 months old.  We finally caved because I was going back to work and needed to sound coherent to other adults, aaaand Happiest Baby just rolled out with a Snoo rental program!  The rental program, at the time of publishing, is $98/month.  Given that we will likely transition Baby A out of the Snoo before 12 months, I figured it was worth it.

My only regret is that we didn’t start with the Snoo Smart Sleeper sooner. It makes me sad thinking about the sleep that I missed out on the first 3+ months of sweet Baby A’s life.  I’ll be honest, I’m a little apprehensive about returning the Snoo and transitioning to a crib.  But in the meantime, I’m going to appreciate and enjoy the sleep that I am getting because the Snoo is our extra set of hands keeping Baby A sleeping safely and soundly.
